Dame Susan Rice DBE

Susan is the Chairman of Scottish Water, Business Stream, and the Scottish Fiscal Commission. She is a Chartered Banker and was previously the Managing Director of Lloyds Banking Group. As Chief Executive, and then Chairman of Lloyds TSB Scotland, she became the first woman to head a UK clearing bank in 2000. In 2012, she became the first woman elected as President of the Scottish Council for Development and Industry.

She is also Senior Independent Director of J. Sainsbury’s plc, and a non-executive with the North American Income Trust, Big Society Capital, the Banking Standards Board and a lay member of Edinburgh University’s Court. Susan was previously on the boards of SSE plc and the Bank of England.

At the request of the banking industry, she chairs a UK-wide initiative to create professional standards for bankers for the first time in the UK. She also chairs the Patrons’ Governors of the National Galleries of Scotland and Scotland’s 2020 Climate Group. Susan has spoken internationally about finance for renewables, climate justice, and has also driven a number of initiatives in the area of financial inclusion.

Susan was born in the US and has degrees from Wellesley and Aberdeen University, and honorary doctorates from eight Scottish universities. She is a Regent of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh and a Fellow of the Chartered Banker Institute, the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce and the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
