Silk top hats were formerly part of the bank's uniform, along with swallow-tail coats, black waistcoats and white neckerchiefs. Nineteenth century clerks were instructed to conduct 'no business outside the bank except in top hats'.
Top hats were first introduced to London in 1797 by a haberdasher called John Etherington. His new look caused such a commotion that crowds gathered, women fainted and Etherington was arrested for inciting a riot.
