Spanish dollar coin, 18th century

Minted in the Spanish Americas from 1497, these silver coins were recognized as currency across the world.  Often cut into halves, quarters and eighths, they became known as 'pieces of eight'.

In 1797, owing to an extreme shortage of silver coins, the Bank of England over-stamped half a million pounds' worth of Spanish dollars and released them into general circulation.
