Strong box, 17th century

A forerunner to the modern safe, the iron bound strong box dates from the bank's earliest days.  Its solid construction and intricate locking system were designed to ensure the safety of gold and other valuables.

In Victorian times such boxes came to be known as Armada chests, invoking fanciful images of sea chests carried on board the Spanish Armada.
