Line drawing of bank's proposed facade, 1826

The architect Charles Parker was commissioned to design a new banking house at 37 Fleet Street.  Many of his ideas were influenced by a prolonged stay in Italy.

The new banking house replaced a maze of narrow passageways and irregular rooms with elegant well-proportioned spaces, large windows and high ceilings. Offices, secure warehousing and living accommodation were all incorporated into the new design.
