The original leather bottle, 17th century

The original leather bottle, 17th century

Signs were used to identify businesses in the 17th century.  The bottle would have been gilded and would have hung over the doorway from an ornamental bracket, high enough to allow a horse and rider to pass easily beneath.

Gilded objects were a popular choice for goldsmiths' signs, denoting luxury and wealth.
