Double headed eagle, 1966

Double headed eagle, 1966

Part of the Hoare family coat of arms since the early 1700s.  The sculpture sits at the end of the ground floor corridor of 37 Fleet Street and was created by Jonathan Kenworthy.

The double headed eagle has been a popular motif throughout history.  Both the Byzantine Empire and the Russian Tsars used it to signify their dominion over East and West.  Today it can still be found on several national flags.
